dc motor run at very low speed

I am looking at how to run a ball screw at very low speed,(1 inch in 12 minutes), to push a 1000 lb load.. I would prefer to use a servo motor, but because of cost i am being asked to look into using a DC Motor. Does anyone out there have thoughts oin this and reasons to go one way or another.

Give serious consideration to using an AC indution motor and a vector drive, either sensorless or with an encoder if you need higher precision. The AC systems aren't quite as good as a true servo where very high performance is required but are plenty good enough for most positioning applications. The AC motor is tougher, cheaper, lasts longer, and needs less maintenance.

Follow vpl's advice and re-post in forum237 where you will get some opinions from guys who work with these things all day every day.

DC gearmotor packs a lot of punch in a minimum package. DC motor to gearbox to worm drive.
