Dear all
I am trying to analyze residual stress in welding. For that I generated a 2D model of dimension 0.2*0.003 m in Abaqus. All the Material properties are assigned as per requirement. Now I applied the surface heat flux of about 734400 J/s (voltage=24,I=180A,Speed=5mm/sec,Effic=0.8).But I was confused with length to which the heat input has to be applied. The heat is applied to a length of 5 mm over the surface but the heat results turned up to be very low (near to 63 o C).Length of the beam was approximated to 5-10 mm. When I am applying it over the nodes (around 3 nodes) I am getting reasonable results (near to 6000).But I am not able to infer anything.
1. Can anyone suggest the logic for applying the heat input in Abaqus for welding?
2. Is there any correction I have to make for calculating heat input and the things to be taken care of while calculating the number of nodes to which the heat to be applied?
3. Also I required the method to which the element birth and death has to be applied in Abaqus while doing structural analaysis?
*Heat transfer coefficient =15 W/m2-K ,Room temp=32oC

The surface area is calculated by the one geometric dimension and the out-of-plane thickness, that you provide in the Solid Section.

Regarding your last question: Are talking about damage or just element de/activation? For damage it is obvious, for the other you should look toward an option called Model Change.

I am considering this as plain strain model. So do we need to consider the out of plane thickness?.Its a 2D symmetric model. The heat input has to be applied at welding zone but to a certain distance. If I am using the nodal points for applying the heat input how many node I should select to apply the required amount of heat?.Do I need to select the nodes along the thickness. Also if I am applying over the surface how much length I should apply the calculated heat input?.

I just want to deactivate the element in the during the heat input step.and active it after cooling

The heat input hast to be given for 1 sec
the cooling ha to be done in 900 sec

Both the temperature and residual stress has to be evaluated
