I am working through a detail where an elevated concrete slab is supported on bar joists. For the deck edge angle, would the welded connection be made between the joists or the deck? Is there a concern with either one if proper fastening rates can be obtained? See att.

I agree that is probably both. But, you need to look at what the edge angle is supporting and what is the lateral system's load path between the diaphragm and shear wall. It looks like load need to go from the diaphragm into the angle, and then the angle to the joists, and finally from joist, through the joist seats to the wall.

You also might want to check your joist seat rollover capacity to determine if you need to add blocking.

The angle should be welded to the joists and the deck welded, shot or screwed to the angle. Since you'll have only the edge of the deck return from the flute to work with, it will be easier to screw or shoot the deck to the angle than to weld. Welding will likely blow holes in the radius of the deck where the flute begins.

If little or no load on it, deck suppliers have a 'screed' CFS angle that would be welded to the OWSJ with the deck secured to it as Ron mentions. Agree with Ron's fasteners, but, in this locale, the deck is usually attached with puddle welds for economy. Fastening with screws/shot is becoming more cost effective.

Appreciate the responses, makes sense given load path. Dik, I too have seen a few contractors requesting shot fastening of decks every so often. Typically they have been hedging their bets on labor costs compared to material. I need to check in with the contractor's next time to see the results
