Hello

I have been asked to design a deep pit swine building in Kansas. I usually just do the environmental permitting work for these facilities and have never dealt with the concrete design. Would anyone be willing to share some design methods and specifications required for this type of project. What I am really needing is reinforcment or the walls and floor. Should I use rebar in the floor or can poly fibers be used? I am assuming the walls will have to have rebar. What size rebar should be used and at what spacings? How thick should the floor and walls be? What size footings should be used? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

Wooo Hooo - I think you should get a structural engineer to do this for you. I know that in agricultural facilities, and even in places where the pigs live, there isn't a requirement for a licensed engineer & stamped drawings but if you are asking whether fibers can structurally reinforce concrete floors you are out of your league.

fibers do not provide structural reinforcement. You will need rebar and an experienced structural engineer to do the design for you. For foundation design and loadings, you need to also get a geotechnical engineer on the project.

Thanks for the link dik. It is greatly appreciated.

Sokay... part of my job description... BTW, don't take JAE's comments too lightly...

Reminds me of a comment I made to my cousin 40 years ago... he was studying Agriculture and I was studying Engineering... and there was general friction between the two faculties... told him that some of my engineering classmates said that aggies weren't fit to eat with the pigs and that I had to stand up for him... and told them that they were! <G>

I think you are just referring to the deep pits that will not be structural. I would treat it as a normal septic tank or so. We have had done some design in the past. Sulfide resistant concrete is a must. We have never used poly fibres so cant qoute on that. But the government agency asked for coated rebar. I cant remember what it was coated with but like a latex to resist rusting.
The rebar spacing was a little tighter trying to eliminate cracking, and water stops were used at all the joints.

depends on the aggie, I guess... it wasn't until after he graduated that he got it... <G>

The best answer is with this anecdote:

When my yougest was just a toddler, we got him a second 'stuffed bear' and asked him if he was going to name it... he said he would and it would be called "Fluffy two/too"; he had named his first one "Fluffy one". At the time I asked him if the 'one' represented a number or the item... and he said he wasn't going to tell me... When he named the second bear, I asked him if the 'two/too' was the number or if it was in addition... He told that he wasn't going to tell me that, either.
