Hello all,

Does anyone know where I can find information on deep sea currents in deep sea drilling areas? I need them so I can analyse the behavour of a frame being lowered through the water column to 10,000 feet.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Graeme

Thanks JL. Sorry I completely forgot to log on to thank you for the link earlier. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite what I was looking for.

If anyone else is reading this thread looking for similar data I have found a good site at:

It has a list of all the drilling areas in the Gulf, with their depths and the current velocities at certain depths, with their directions. I think the deepest one is roughly 3,000 feet.

Does anyone have any idea where the details of currents (velocities and direction) nearer to 10,000 feet could be found?

Thanks,

Graeme

Wow. I think you are going to have to punt.. Remember the ocean is 99.999% unexplored. I doubt you will be able to find a map of those currents as how can you measure them? Hanging some thing on the end of a 2 mile cable doesn't work very well even.

If you are trying to design something somewhere I would expect you'd have to measure it, there.

Maybe you could talk to someone at MBARI or Woods Hole.

The operating companies have proprietary loop studies done for their deep-water platform projects. The studies that I have seen have lots of confidential proprietary red stamps on the plots.

The Scripps Institute had a deep water coring operation running in the Seventies. They have probably a database of worldwide deepsea currents.
