Hello,

I am in the middle of an issue where we ordered a new wellhead that has a 3000# 410 SS flanged connection to the underground piping. Our prior design used 316SS 600# flanged connections. We are now in the midst of fabricating a spool piece to go from 3000# back to the 600#.

What code would this be covered under? I saw from a prior forum that B31.3 is generally used but I would like to verify.

What exactly do you mean by 3000#??

Do you mean Asme b16.11 3000 psi or API 6A 3000??

I've not seen a 3000 pound flange before a most such fittings are screwed or socket weld.

Asme b31.3 is a good a code as you're going to get but this one is puzzling me.

Well heads are often API 6A flanges.

What is design pressure as Class 600 is air a bit less than 3000 psi...

Thank you for the API 6A reference,

Per API 6A 14.1.2.1 our flange should be in line with a Type 6B flange. Piping will be in accordance with B31.3

OK, that make smore sense.

The code break usually starts immediately d/s the API6A flange to be often B 31.3.

You do need to check the max design pressure in the system though as there is a difference here in terms of API 6A 3000 max pressure (3000 psi) and B 16.5 class 600 (about 1450 psi depending on temperature)
