Definition of Class1-Div2

New Customer wants equip for Class1-Div2 location.
Are we talking explosion proof here?

Class I Div II equipment is safe in an environment where explosive gases are occasionally present. Div I equipment is explosion proof in an environment where explosive gases are present during most normal operations.

Does that mean explosion proof electricals are req'd in a classI-DivII environment. Sometime ago we had to quote a job that had some classI-DivII issue and we proposed moving equipment to an area either FROM or TO a classI-DivII location to avoid the explosion proof issue. The job never came to fruition so I've forgotten all the classI-DivII rules and regs.

The Class I Div 1 equipment is also called "intrinsicly safe" or "explosion proof". The Div 2 stuff can also be called explosion proof (but generally not "intrinsicly safe&quot.

I've always avoided using the "explosion proof" or "intrinsicly safe" terms because they just aren't precise enough for material call-outs. If you specify that electrical equipment must meet Class I Div 2 requirements, then you shouldn't get any nasty suprises. All the manufacturers of electrical components understand the Class and Division terminology, and they won't play marketing games with that terminology. On the other hand, the "intrinsically safe" and "explosion proof" terms are subject to creative interpitation.
