Definition of supercritical/ultra supercritical power plant 1

Gentlemen,

I am struggling to find a workable definition of the steam conditions supercritical and ultra supercritical power plant and would appreciate any assistance that can be offered.

I tend to think of supercritical as generally steam conditions of 250bar/570C/570C with maximum conditions of 270bar/580C/580C.

Ultra supercritical I think of as any plant with pressure above 300bar and steam temperatures above 600C/600C.

When suggesting these conditions, I am thinking about proven technology that is commercially available rather that something that may be available in 5 to 10 years time.

I would suggest that you obtain a copy of the paper from the International Joint Power Conference that was in 2000, the paper is available over the internet and is titled;

"Materials for Boilers in Ultrasupercritical Power Plants"
by R. Viswanathan and W. Baaker from EPRI

I have a copy of their paper and it provides a useful description of the evolving technology from supercritical to ultrasupercritical boiler design.

Thanks for the advice. To my surprise I found a copy of the paper you mentioned.

After looking at various papers I have decided to call any plant above 275bar/565C/565C as ultra supercritical.

Standard tables of thermodynamic properties of fluids (e.g the classic ones arranged by Rogers and Mayhew) show supercritical steam conditions starting at 225bar/350C. Rough rule of thumb is 221bar and above.
Where do you get 250bar/570C from?

athomas is referring to the nominal throttle conditions as the HP steam enters the main steam line, and not discussing the min conditions needed to consider the fluid as supercritical.
