Is there any way to delete the history of a part in order to end up with a "dumb" solid? I have a SW part that started life as an IGES file of an assembly. The import of this file produced one part with a bunch of solid bodies, most of which I'm not interested in.

I know I can delete the bodies I don't need, but then I still have all the history of these bodies in my feature tree. Can I delete this information in order to end up with a tree that shows only 1 imported solid body? Is this even necessary? I ask because in a previous job I used to do this all the time using I-DEAS. In I-DEAS, at least, this made the part a whole lot more manageable because the software didn't need to continually evaluate the steps used to create the part.

I know I could delete the bodies I'm not interested in, export as IGES, STEP, etc..., and re-import, but I'm wondering if it's possible to do this without the export/import portion of the program.

Thanks,

Otherwise you cannot make a dumb solid out of standard part in SW. you will have to export it out and reimport it

Export out as a parasolid and import back in - walla dumb solid.

Parasolid is native language to SW and it brings the file in much cleaner.

The problem (which I'm sure you are aware of, but I'm going to say it all anyway) You lose vauleable data, and if the part ever changed, then you would have to go back to the orginal (If you planned on keeping it) and make the change and re-export it, import it, reassembly it (maybe, depending on the replace part command). Or if you deleted the original, then you would have to remake it or add it to the dumb solid.

Either way you lose the dimension data from the part.

If you keep the original file, you will have to maintain 2 Databases of files.

Yeah, that's the breaks with full parametry (as opposed to Rhino and other programs). It's far better to have the parametric history than not--you can always delete it with an export/import, but you can never add what doesn't exist.

You can do this with whole assemblies into IGES or parasolid (which I also favor greatly--small file size, perfect models). Export the assembly into parasolid format (.x_t, again my favorite type) and SW will save all parts into a single assembly file. When you reopen it, put it in its own directory because SW will recreate part files used by the assembly--you probably don't want to clutter up an active directory with full histories.
