Deleting unwanted layers that are not used

There are no objects in the drawing with these layers, yet the layer manager shows them as used, and so won't let me delete them. How can I get rid of these unwanted/unused layers?? Auditing and purging do not work.

Also, I x-ref'd another company's drawing into mine and their original layers became embedded in my drawing even after detaching the drawing and purging. Any ideas??

sometimes what I do is wblock the stuff I need to another file and "most of the time" only the used layers,linetypes etc. are in that file. Sometimes this doesn't work.

Under the file pull down menu,goto drawing utilities and purge layers.If the layer is not removed then you have an oject in that layer so you will have to find it- it may even be a point somewhere in your drawing that may prevent you form getting rid of that layer. I normally use purge all which can reduce the size of the drawing substantially.

Also, once you have set the layer with an unfound object, use the erase command and when it asks to select, type in "all". Sometimes this will locate an invisible object. Generally when you cannot locate a hidden item, it is contained in an unexploded block...

It sounds like the offending layers were embedded into your drawing through a 'bound' x-reference. If that is the case, this problem can be avoided in the future by selecting 'overlay' when attaching reference files.

I wonder if these layers are part of your
prototype drawing or the basic drawing
that you open for a new drawing.
If so, you will have to revise this for
those layers to be removed.

I've had this problem arise as I've used blocks in my drawing with the offending Layer(S) in the block, and even when they are empty in the block (or in your case x-ref) they won't purge, either. The w-block option mentioned above sometimes helps, but if an unexploded occurrence of the block comes forward into the new drawing, you'll have to go hunting. This is where I'd start, especially if you've removed X-Ref drawings and THEN w-blocked the results.

I have found a usefull programe called CDGPURGE. It can be found on the internet for free. simply download it and follow the install instructions that come with it.
Most of the drawings that I have used this on have seen a size reduction of around 3X if not more. It will not remove "hidden" objects from drawings, but it will remove any "hidden" information that you cannot see in the drawing.
As far as removing unused layers, make sure that the blocks you are using do not have objects on the layers that you are trying to remove. You can check this by inserting the blocks and exploding them to see what layers the objects are on.
