Hello Everybody,

I'm working on a tank-farm fire water system. I like to know where to locate the deluge valve.

Is there any code or standard that specify appropriate location for a deluge valve assembly systems?

Can I locate about 14 numbers of deluge valve systems in one location.

Thanks for your upcoming response.

I don't know if it was a code issue or not, but we have always put the deluge assembly as close to the deluge system as possible. Many of these have a manual release as well as automatic release. So, I would want that manual release close to the area.

Not so close that if the FD needs to get to the manual dump they can reach it without being exposed to the fire.

Sorry, I should have been more specific in that. When we did these tank farms in the past, there was typically a "blast wall" or something that the deluge valve assembly was behind so it was in a safe, accessible area. But, it was relatively close to the area it was protecting.

Hi!

We could refer also to NFPA-15 if the deluge valve is for the water spray system which indicate in clause 6.3.1.4.1 - system actuation valves shall be as close to the hazard protected as accesibility during the emergency will permit.

One way to do it is as mentioned by travis mack in which blast wall is provided safe distance is concern

hope it helps,

If there are dikes in the tank farm, obviously outside. The definition of a safe place or the need of a protective wall/cover in case of fire exposure can be an easy common sense issue, or it may need some fire exposure safe distance formulas consideration or complicated fire modelling to demonstrate it, it depends on specific case. I think there is no problem to put all valves together, I´ll check if this leads to confussion to use the systems in an emergency.
