Can water softener salt be a substitute for desiccant (a or c) in a desi-dri system. Or is there anything thing else that can be used instead of the expensive propitiatory desi-dry desiccant from NATCO.

Thanks,
David Hall

There are other delequesent-drier salts that are slightly less expensive than Des-Dri, but they're not cheep either. You can use water-softener salt if you don't care about it working (it won't work).

Dessicant is used because of it's good drying properties compared to other drying methods.

It is a dry method of drying where reaction is not desirable.

There are wet method of drying like TEG.

It all depends on what is the aim of the drying process.

There are 2 sides of a coin
One is to give, one is to take
Give until it hurts with a smile

Tetra Chemicals makes a product called Water Shield that is a solid calcium chloride dehydration product. They claim that their manufacturing process reuslts in a higher crush strength and capacity. Depending on where you are, it is available through differnt vendors.
