Hi All, i am new engineer here and I have some question regarding design life of pressure vessel.

Is there any code and standards (e.g ASME,TEMA & etc..) that emphasized or governed the design life
of a pressure vessel should be at least 20 or 25 yrs?
(sorry my english was bad)

Thanks for the sharing

Customer assigns the requirement for life cycle in his contract specifications/bid specifications.

Service conditions then determine what corrosion allowance, fatigue allowance limits, and margins are justified against the added costs of each allowance to reach that minimum lifetime. The Codes cannot specifically assign a corrosion or erosion margin because they cannot anticipate every condition.

Also, a one-off or test or pilot rig may not require the same allowance as a very-high cost plant that MUST run for 30-40 years to get a payback on the cost of construction for exotic steels and expensive detailing of equipment.

Agree with the above. With that said, design life is usually based on an economic asset life of 30 years using accounting methods in the US.

Agree with the above responses. Design life can be considerably shorter based on operating conditions (corrosive environment, fatigue, creep, etc.) and the requirements/needs of the Owner/Operator. One needs to look at cost of replacement with low cost materials versus the use of high cost materials.
