would any one enlighten how you go about determining the thickness of crash concrete layer underlying existing subgrade to be used as the piling mat to support a piling rig.
what are the factors to be considerd
is there an softwere/program that is user friendly for solving these problem.

And how can it underly the existing subgrade?

Design of working platform for rigs can be found on the site of the FPS (Federation of Piling Specialists ) in UK.

Thanks BigHarvey, you have been very helpfull.

There is also a BRE based upon the FPS, referenced as BR 470, this includes working platform design for cohesive and granular sub-grades with worked examples. Unfortunaltey the methodology for incorporating geo-grids into the granular layer is not quite up to speed but does give a good indication of the likley [i.e. minimum] reduction in thickness through the inclusion of geo-grid/s into the mat. From experience, each supplier of geo-grid has a different methodology for 'proving' their material and design, and often they will warrent the design if you buy their material.

BR 470 is the document indicated on the FPS website. We are talking about the same document ! We have also one under preparation in France but it is not yet public. BR 470 is allowing calculation of loads induced by the rig for each working phase ( the french document is not very good for that ) but the geotech calculations are more straight forward in the future french document. They boyh give similar thickness for the platform.

Again guys, thanks very much. you have made my life a bit easier.
