can anyone help me out with how to design round steel silos? At the very least I could use some reference manual names also if anyone is aware of "hidden problems" things that need designed which aren't immediately obvious, that would be awesome.

thanks,

Jeremiah

The Steel Plate Fabricators Association publishes a design manual for steel bins and silos. You should check with them.

Also, ASME has a committee that is in the process of writting a design code for steel bins.

The "Structural Engineering Handbook", Gaylord and Gaylord, is a good starting point. The book contains some information regarding the design of silos.

Gaylord and Gaylord also edited a book titled "Design of Steel Bins for Storage of Bulk Solids" - this is an in-depth text on the subject.

Lastly, John Buzek wrote a manual on the design of silos - "Useful Information on the Design of Steel Bins & Silos". It is an AISI publication.

Well take from me. You need to contact the Lincoln Arc Welding foundation in Cleveland and order their book titled Tubular Steel Structures, theory and design. It is an excellent reference on this subject matter. It is also very cheap since it is subsidized by the foundation. It is full of theory, examples, charts and tables. It is one of my most valuable texts in my library.

Colleagues, let me tell you, I cannot copy these most impressive books for the price of the real thing. I used to buy the Design of Welded Structures By Omer W. Blodgett, Sc.D., P.E., (Hardcover, 832 pages) and give it as gift to all young engineers that came to work for me. Dr Blodgett is one of the most impressive and knowledgeable fellow engineers. I have attended several of his seminars. I learn so much from him and his love to the profession shows every time he speaks. He is a pillar in my eyes and book!
