Hello,

I am new to Abaqus. I am wanting to simulate the forces that are applied to a stand up paddleboard (very similar to a surfboard). However, I am unable to figure out the best approach to creating my part. For the geometry, how do I go about giving my part the ellipse shape with rounded edges? More advanced, how would I make the bottom of the board tapered? I have tried 3D solid extrusion and revolution, but these don't give me what I want. Neither does the shell options. Ideally, I would have a 4mm shell with specific material properties that encapsule a solid with different material properties. Thanks!

Abaqus has very simple 3D modeling options. It’s difficult to model complex (and especially curved) surface and solid shapes in this software. If you have access to any CAD program (like CATIA)), I recommend drawing this model there, exporting it to .stp file and then importing to Abaqus. When it comes to necessary modeling operations, YouTube tutorials for surfboards should be helpful.

I agree, Abaqus has only basic modeling capabilities. It is not a CAD software. If the shape is too complex for Abaqus/CAE, go to Solidworks, CATIA or another CAD tool and model it there. Bring that geometry then to Abaqus.

It is simple to simulate a shell structure with a solid core. Basically you have the solid geometry and create the outer shell with a method that is called 'Skin'. You can find it in the property module. So it is not a geometry modeling method, but only something that creates the shell feature around the solid for the simulation.
