As part of an engineering project, I have been given the task to come up with a log cutting system. I must design an automated AC motor powered cutting system for sawing timber across the grain in variable short lengths for firewood at a maximum rate of 0.6 tons/hour and a max trunk diameter of 0.3 m. Load bearing, cutting and drive elements must have a minimum factor of safety (FOS) of 5.
I have decided to use a blade cutting system similar to this. I am wondering how to go about calculating the forces on the blade of the saw? I have researched different types wood properties but so far have not found any information on how to calculate the forces on the blade to cut the log. If anyone could provide me with some helpful links or information, it would be greatly appreciated!
