Hey all,

I'm trying to design a masonry lintel for a 4' window opening. It experiencing next to no moment and I'm trying to use a 1 course bond beam. Problem is, 1-10M bar is below pmin but 1-15M is above pbal. I'm designing to the Canadian standards.

Any solutions or references to some more comprehensive examples would be awesome.

Always appreciative.

For such a small span, the effect of arching action will most likely support wall itself, leaving only a very small triangle of masonry to be supported by the lintel. I'd bet the lintel will work if unreinforced. If it makes you feel better use one bar.

Yeah, it's pretty common to just not worry about that for small scale stuff.

The exception would be if there is a concentrated point load within the arching action triangle. For example, a bar joist could be bearing on the masonry wall above the window lintel.

One way to have it calc out (for your own comfort or for others) is to design using the #10M bar and a smaller lintel cross section (depth), so that pmin is met. Then the rest of the bond beam is just considered 'along for the ride'.

There used to be provisions for using less than min steel if the moment were increased by 1/3, if memory serves.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?
