Detail Views Detail

We are having a bit of a problem here identifying how a detail view should be shown. Solidworks defaults to a complete full round circle and we use a leader to identify which detail it is by letter. Then you have your scaled up detail "B" lets say down below the part. Well we have an old school drawing checker here (all us engineers are under 30) and he is telling us we are doing it wrong but we can't find any documentation to show us exactly how it should be done per ASME. I have the ASME Y14.3M-1994 in front of me and this is what I see.... (See attached file) Can someone please set us straight as we have been arguing about this for a few weeks. Thanks everyone.

What you show is correct, you may also show a leader with the letter "A" in place of what you show. I would show the scale as .125 high letters. You can change the default how it is shown in SolidWorks.

I started on the "board" in 1968 and this is the only way I remember seeing a detail view done. What is the other side of the debate?

Well our drawing checker is now saying he wants to see us using rectangles to show where the detail is because it is cleaner. But at the same time we want to start getting into ASME standards for our drawings as we are going to be sending more and more stuff out to vendors. We have been using circle's with leaders which I think looks fine. This guy started on the board about 45 years before I was born. So what do you guys know about showing detail views using rectangles? Thanks.

Sounds like your checker is going off the deep end. You may need to "elevate" this to a higher neutral party. Come well-prepared with documentation.

Rectangles are a p!$$-poor choice for details. They visually blend to easily with existing object lines.

Rectangle details are possible in SolidWorks, but they are not standard. I would default to circles and only use rectangles or other shapes where clarity or space contraints are at issue. In my experience, rectangle details only give additional clarity in very rare situations. They certainly should not be a requirement.

I agree with fcsuper.

I've also worked with your old school drawing checker. Make sure you are firm but at the same time show respect in stating your case. It can be a long road when it comes to change for some people.

I have never seen rectangles used, even from old school.
