I am working on a project in Florida which the DeWaal Pile System has been listed as one of the options for foundation design. Does anyone know where I can find articles or books about this kind of pile systems? Also, does anyone know the minimum amount of reinforcement I have to call out for each pile? Are the same type of bar cages used in drilled piers suitable for the DeWaal piles?

I was involved in a project using DeWaal piling in the late 1990's. We accepted them as a Contractor proposed lower cost alternate to driven H-pile. DeWaal piling were quickly installed and have performed well.

Since it is a proprietary product, the pile design including rebar, was prepared by an engineering firm retained by the Contractor. As I recall, there was one, vertical #8 bar - that's all. Due to the installation method, there cannot be much, if any more reinforcing.

The DeWaal pile is just a bored displacement pile very similar to other systems like Omega pile or in the US the Berkel APGD pile. Look on geoforum website at pile info where many piling systems are described. Just remember that since it's displacement piling, the penetration in hard layers will be less than a meter. In sands , you will observe very high bearing capacities compared to piles done with esoil extraction. Very good article by Willie NeSmith in DFI proceedings in Nice " Design and Installation of Pressure-Grouted, Drilled Displacement Piles " where more than 50 load tests have been analyzed and design parameters derived.

We have in fact done 60 foot long Dewaal piles in CA (and many jobs in FLA too) with full length cages, so you can place a structural cage in these piles. I work for Morris Shea and designed them to resist axial and lateral loads.

Does anyone know the approximate VLF cost for this type of pile system?
