We are currently rebuilding a Daihatsu 6DL Ships Service Diesel Generator.
The pistons have been removed for about six weeks, during this time the crankshaft journals have been wrapped in 'Denso' tape for protection.
When the tape was removed and the journals cleaned in preparation for reassembly, two journals appear to have localised pitting damage, as if an acid had 'puddled' on selected areas.
We may end up removing the crank for grinding, but knowing what caused this damage would be helpful.
Any suggestions????
