I am making a new cam for a CAV inline 6-cyl injection pump.
Just wondering what material and treatment would be appropriate for this purpose?
Thanks in advance.

8620, carburized, would rate high in consideration. But, it would help if you could give a little more detail about section size, configuration, etc.

There are some other options available, again depending on the section size, configuration, etc. What is driving the cam? How is it joined/connected?

Hi, according to memory:
Overall length is around 300 mm, bearings in rear end and 100 mm behind the gear wheel. Max rpm is 3200 on engine, aim is 10 mm stroke and 12-13 mm elements Bosch P modified type. Overall diameter max will be 60 mm due to casing. Roller tappets and engine lubricants.
The problem could be bending, the OEM cam breaks under stress from 13mm elements.

BMW worked with Hirschvogel on a novel eccentric shaft/camshaft for the Valvetronic VVT system, which consisted of the following:

a. Material was 38MnVS6 (similar to 15V41 according to ASTM A 921) which is a a ferrite-pearlite steel capable of forming microalloy precipitates (dispersion hardening) during controlled cooling from hot forging temperatures.
b. Hot forging followed by controlled cooling
c) Plasma nitrocarburizing

This option will be inferior to 8620 carburized and then quenched and tempered in both strength and wear resistance due to high contact stresses, but can be lower cost. It depends on the stresses and the capabilities of the forging supplier. If this will be a limited number of parts that will be machined out of bar, then 8620 is the best option.

Hi
Thank you TVP, I've checked out the steel types, but was suggested IMPAX as a third possibility. Do you guys know if it would work, since this we actually already have at hand?
