We are in the process to select two Diesel Generators 2.5 MW, and would like to know what differences are between a generator API-546 and one Nema MG-1.

Essentially, I know that the API-546 test section is more complex than the one at Nema MG-1, but not sure about the area classification and winding sealing.

Thanks.

I agree with electricpete that posting in the other forum will bring broader experience.

Having said that, API 546 is basically laid on top of NEMA MG-1. In other words, you will still get an MG-1 machine. Through its main text and datasheet appendix, API 546 will either specify a definite MG-1 option where several are available or occasionally eliminate one or more options. Rarely, does it require something that is not already an option.

Since virtually every NEMA motor/generator manufacturer of that class of equipment is already tooled up for the API Standards (most were on the Standard’s Task Force), you will generally get a premium machine – at a not-quite, but almost, premium cost. It can sometimes be difficult to tell if the difference is worth it.
