Dimension has arrows only - no values

Hi all, Newby to solid edge

When I try to dimension an element, using any of the dimension functions, ie smart dimension et al, I only get the arrows - no values.

What am I doing wrong ?

You probably have the dimension type set to BLANK.
If it is, when you click place dimension the icon with the "X" on it will appear greyed-out.
Click the icon and select one of the other options.
