I want to dimension parts in an assembly to get the distance of parts at different levels but have the dimension lie on one plane. Right now SW gives me a point to point dimension. Acad can do this with snaps.

You can tag a dimension from point to point, edge to edge, face to face, and or Plane to Plane. These can be mixed up. If you do this in the front view (per say) it will show up in the front view. It will show up in other views or spinning of the assembly, and it will look like it's point point.

In a drawing the dimension may be hidden by a part or something, maybe the right view shows the parts more visible. So pick the dimension hold the shift key down drag the dimension to the other view and now you should have your dimension in the right view.

I hope I have understood you correctly, and I hope I have answered this to help your need, :) Scott Baugh, CSWP
