Dimensioning Closest Area

I just switched from 2010 to 2011 Solid Works. In attempting to dimension from a horizontal line to the top of an arc the system shows a small blue and gray ball that prevents me from picking the top of the arc when I hold down the shift key. How would I rectify this problem?

Is this in a sketch or in a drawing? Either way you can add a construction line and dimension that as a work around.

Not sure about your blue ball, I don't see it, but I just let the dimension snap to the arc center then selected Leaders|Arc Condition|Max to get the dmn to the top of the arc.

Sounds like the Rapid Dimension tool, although that's usually blue and orange.

It can be dismissed on the fly, or permanently disabled.
