Can someone point me in the right direction to see if direct fire on a KO Drum is acceptable in the code, is there any specific BTU loads that are ok?

A customer wants to put several 500,000BTU burners on the bottom of the tank to warm it up, which sounds like a dangerous and stupid decision, but this is what they think they want. Is this ok to do per code?

I don't know about your particular situation but it is done in various forms all the time. These people have done a lot heating for us. They have have the ability to keep very good control on the temperature and the heating and cooling rate. A 500,000 BTU isn't a very big burner that said control is the problem. Hot work has the burner external to equipment and uses on hot gases for the heating.

PipingEquipment,

Pressure vessels subject to direct firing is allowed in ASME Section VIII Div. 1 provided it meets the requirements of U-1(h) and UW-2(d).
