So I am connecting W beams to HSS Columns. The boss calls out Direct Weld moment connections with a shear plate and I can't seem to find any explanation on the size of the plate( in the beams span direction) and on what the groove weld should be, or in other words, what the gap size should be between flanges and column wall. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

This would usually be covered by the fabricator working to whatever your local welding standard might be. Depending on the welding process/prequalification/presense of backing/type of preparation, the root gap is usually specified in the welding standards (min/max/specific dimension, etc). So maybe check the prequalified welds in your welding standard.
