I am working on a cap bank application in a medium voltage system in Canada. Does the canadaian code ( or a local province code)require a disconnect switch infront of the breaker for maintenace reasons?

Is the breaker indoors or outdoors? If it were an outdoor breaker, I have nearly always seen disconnect switches on either side of the breaker.

Breakers are basically outdoor circuit switchers which open and close contacts are not visible.

I'm pretty sure smallgreek knows what a circuit breaker is.

Utility system or industrial?

I meant to explain that the circuit breaker is outdoor in an open substation and the contacts are not visible.
Jocelyn VersaVac. It's an industrial type application.
They are not inside MEG type mounted circuit breakers.

There would be no NEC requirement for a dedicated disconnect switch ahead of the breaker - not sure about Canada.

Obviously, there would need to be a way to de-energize the breaker for maintenance, and a local disconnect would be convenient.

Also, some safety rules may require a "visible" break to allow maintenance work to be done. But the NEC does not require this.
