Do the ASME drawing specifications make any provisions for obsolete ASTM or other specifications that have been replaced by newer specifications? For example, an older drawing calls out a material in accordance with ASTM A570. The A570 spec has been replaced by A1011. Would the drawing have to be updated? Thanks!

A good question for the Design Engineer or the entity that has Design Responsibility.
There are orders for MIL-45208A and MIL-9858 still being let by the primes. Probably because the design was proven using those Standards and it would take a re-qualification to update the design.

Be careful, you started with ASME, then went to ASTM.
The only ASTM specs that are considered usable are the current ones. We won't certify to old ones.
ASME though requires that Code rev to be stated. So if you want material to 81ed we would do everything (testing, properties, chem, marking) to that edition.

Don't get me started on obsolete MIL specs. There are some that we no-quote to because the spec says that we must have written approval and there is no longer a source. This doesn't stop some of our competitors but I am not going to caught in that trap.

According to ASME Sec.II Part-A, there is a complete list of material specifications which give us the information regarding the acceptable ASTM editions to ASME. For example - Latest Edition of ASME Sec.II Part-A accepts for SA105 an equivalent ASTM Specification A105 Edition from 88a through 2005.

If you are a member of ASTM (dirt cheap investment), it is possible to get older versions for the standards under the jurisdiction of your committees. You may have to pay for the downloads. They provide a very interesting time line of changes.

For ASME applications you can fabricate to earlier ASME editions if this is in the contract documents.
