Can anyone point me to a document/book that discusses various grades of steel in terms of applications and suggested uses for machinery design?

I am looking more toward an informal discussion of properties, history behind the alloy, effects of alloying metals, use this alloy here but it does not work well here.....etc.

many thanks
Bill

A useful starting point might be an article publisehed in Advanced Materials & Processes August 2003 called "Steel Bars for Automotive Applications" by John Bayer of MacSteel Jackson. Mi. A good summary of the types of steel alloys used in vehicles.
If you can't find a copy I am pretty sure MacSteel will have some available.

There was a document published by the British Standards Institution, British Standard 971:1950, Commentary on British Standard Wrought Steels En Series (Complementary to BS 970:1947) that is a good starting place to understand the various grades of materials and typical uses. It also provides information regarding section sizes for the properties that can be obtained with the various materials. I know that it is old, and the material grades they refer to are not longer applicable, but the underlying information is good, and with very little effort, the equivalent current grades can be determined.

Thanks dmtmet,

We are owned by a company in the UK so perhaps some of my colleagues can track it down.
