I want to design a process vessel as per the sketch attached. The top end of the vessel conforms to SS316L, electropolihsed and the bottom part conforms to Inconel 600 and Hastelloy X 194. The location of the dissimilar weld joint is also shown. The maximum temperature that the weld joint will be subjected to is 350 deg. C. during accidental conditions, it may rise to 450 deg. C but not more.

I wish to know that
a). Filler wire to be used for joining SS316L and Inconel 600
b). Filler wire to be used for joining SS316L and Hastelloy X 194
c). Based on the sketch, how should the welder be qualified for this work?

Thanks and regards,

What Code are you working to?
I would start with the publications by Special metals and Haynes.
For the 600 people typically start with 182, but there are other options.
For X I believe that they will start you off with 556, unless there are other reasons to look at alternates.

Thank you for the response. Design is as per ASME, Boilers and Pressure Vessels Code, Section III Div, 1 subsection NC (Class 2). Testing and inspection conforms to ASME, Boilers and Pressure Vessels Code, Section VIII. Hydrostatic pressure testing and pneumatic pressure testing as per UG-99 and UG-100, respectively of Boilers and Pressure Vessels Code, Section VIII, Div I. Helium leak testing as per ASME, Boilers and Pressure Vessels Code, Section V, Article 10.
However,
a). For joining Inconel 600 and SS316L, Inconel 82 is preferred in some technical reports
b). For joining SS430 and SS316L and for SS316L and Hastelloy X, can Inconel 82 be used?

I would hesitate to use 82 on X, you need to compare some strength and thermal expansion data.
The choice of 182 vs 82 for the 600 welds may also require some testing. My welders say that they like working with 182 better.
