I presume you are referring to proximity of butt welds in pipe. This question has been asked several times. The answer is the Codes do not provide specific guidance. In this situation, use engineering judgment, such as locate the butt welds as far away as possible to avoid overlapping weld heat affected zones and stress concentration effects.

What does your WPS say? Use the qualifcation of the procedure as a tool. If this is for root gap.

Review SecIX QW-250.

Talk to a good Welding Eng.as it could be dependent on process.

If this is for proxmity of joints to one another there could be other concerns--again the Welding Eng. could help you.

dungun,
If you are refering to the proximity of one butt weld to another then do a search on "Proximity of welds" as this has been asked before.

For girth weld spacing, a criterion that was developed many years ago based on welding tests is: the greater of 2 inches or 4 times the wall thickness.
