Hi Friends,

Help me if you can. I am qualifying welders on a 32 inch 39 thick, "Single V Butt"
Gas line pipe and referring acceptance criteria- DNV-OS-F101 2010 for Root penetration

"Table-4 Acceptance criteria for visual and surface method testing of welds"

"Root penetration (Single side welds)- Height <0.2t,but maximum 3mm. Length of excess penetration max 25mm"
my interpretation is 3mm is maximum and over 3mm is excess penetration allowed a length of 25mm

if over 3mm penetration is allowed 25mm long, then what is the limit of height over 3mm?

correct me if I am wrong
Your earliest replies would be much appreciated

Many thanks in advance

If you have penetration greater than 0.2T it is classed as excess penetration.
If it is greater than 3 mm it is a reject.
If it is greater than 0.2T but less than 3 mm in height you are allowed 25 mm maximum in length.
Regards,
Shane

Doesn't matter what you think.
Your interpretation is wrong.
"my interpretation is 3mm is maximum and over 3mm is excess penetration allowed a length of 25mm"
Read what you have posted carefully.
Root penenetration is acceptable up to 0.2T.
Anything over that is classed as excess penetration.
You can have excess penetration between 0.2T and 3 mm but it is 25 mm max in length.
ANYTHING OVER 3 MM IS A REJECT !!!

As sentenced in DNV,I interpreted the maximum 3mm is allowed any length
and over 3mm is classified as excess.

Same for "Cap reinforcement(for single sided welds)height given .2t but Max.4mm

Thank you so much for your time Shane. Much appreciated

Regards.
