I haven't used cold formed steel. I only used hot rolled on all my projects.
When specifying say C12 cold formed steel, do I need to specify a vendor?
Loads are negligible, I just need to correctly call out a C channel cold formed steel with 12" depth

No, but you need to specify more than just the depth. You should specify the depth, width, thickness, and material grade. Others may add to this list.

how should I call out a cold formed?
I'm tempted to call out like this 12S075 by Vulcraft or equivalent

If we size the cold form, we have a note on the drawings about minimum section properties must comply with XX manufacturer.

If it is delegated it could be specified pretty minimally as long as loads are defined and design criteria is provided.

I usually call it out something like, "600S162-43 mil @ __ in." In this format, the 600 signifies the depth of 6 inches, the 162 indicates the flange width of 1 5/8" and 43 mil would be the thickness. Then in my notes, I specify the material grades for the different gauges. We also note, "or approved equal" in the notes.

It depends on whether it's a delegated design item, or whether you're hard specifying the member. When it's delegated design I usually just give a depth and maximum spacing. I let the delegated design engineer determine thickness and width of flange, etc.

When we are doing the CFS design in house we typically spec it similar to mike20793.

Look up the SSMA (Steel stud manufactures association) catalog on their website. They have an ICC number too
They use the same designation as what mike20793 indicated

I usually spec a particular product 'OR APP'D EQ'. This way I'm using something I'm familiar with and have used in past.

I often do work as the delegated designer on cold form jobs.
As others have suggested, all the delegated designer needs is a stud depth and they should be good to go from there.

Sometimes engineers size all the cold form (depth, flange width, mils, spacing, connections etc) yet their specs still call out for a delegated design of cold form which is often baffling to me. Paying someone to do the job twice...
