Any suggestions for ISO 9001-2000 document control software that work well for a research facility? Currently planning to use Lotus notes but there must be something better.

Anything would be better.

What level of control are you looking for? For high-end systems look at UGS' TeamCenter or PTC's Windchill.

My company uses a derivative of Lotus Notes. Perhaps slugflow is around the corner from me.
