Hello
My colleagues and I design a lot of items like pipe/equipment support frames and seismic equipment anchorage using ASCE Ch13. Recently, we have been having a debate about when AISC 341 applies for non-building structures. Note we work in California and in seismic design category D.
AISC 341 Scope Excerpt:
The Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings, hereafter referred to as these
Provisions, shall govern the design, fabrication and erection of structural steel members
and connections in the seismic force-resisting systems (SFRS), and splices and
bases of columns in gravity framing systems of buildings and other structures with
moment frames, braced frames and shear walls. Other structures are defined as those
structures designed, fabricated and erected in a manner similar to buildings, with
building-like vertical and lateral force-resisting elements. These Provisions shall
apply to the design of seismic force-resisting systems of structural steel or of structural
steel acting compositely with reinforced concrete, unless specifically exempted
by the applicable building code.
Questions:
1. Does AISC 341 apply to equipment seismic restraints? This one I think is an easy no...
2. Would a 4 post small(say dim 3'x6'x4') frame serving as a heavy duty pedestal qualify under the highlighted scope? It arguably has all those listed features but it is small.
3. Would a 2 post frame qualify under the highlighted scope? I would think anything (2) posts or less easily would be considered NOT similar to a building.
4. How about a small (3'x4'x7') storage rack?
Please let me know your thoughts and any other tips you guys typically use to distinguish whether AISC 341 applies.
Thanks!
