Does anybody have any good references on designing gusset plates for compression? I've found some stuff on Whitmore's sections and the like but nothing very explicit in terms of a design algorithm. It's such a common scenario. There's just gotta be somthing out there.

If you can find it, get the old AISC "Engineering for Steel Construction", c.1984, page 7-56. It shows a design example and provides some commentary.

Or try the reference indicated in the above book:

"Guide to Design Criteria for Bolted and Riveted Joints", John W. Fisher and John H. A. Struik, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., NY.

See "AISC Manual of Steel Construction. Volume II. Connections" (1992) p. 7-105 "Heavy Bracing Connections - The Uniform Force Method"

Or AISC LRFD Manual Volume II (1994) p.11-19 "Force Transfet in Diagonel Bracing Connections".

By the way, AISC is publishing new AISC LRFD Manual. See their web site
Good luck

And also In

Steel Design Handbook LRFD method
Tamboli
Mc Graw Hill

which is more than average complete on connections by the contribution of knowledgeable engineer/s in the field.

Thanks everybody.

JAE: I checked out those resources that you listed. The sound ideal but I can't get my hands on either of them. Not even used.

whymrg: That was a good start but when it comes to compression of the gusset, the AISC manual just says to make sure the factored resistance is greater that the factored load.

Taro: I looked at that steel tip article (40 pg worth). Good stuff.

ishvaaag: Glad to hear you recomment that Taboli book. Coincidently, I ordered a connection & detailing book written by him this morning.

well, you can refer gaylord and gaylord for most of the steel designs.
some of the other reccomended books are steel structures by negi, ramachandra.

There was another thread that directed me to the site which has a "Steel Tips" section on it. In Steel Tips, you can download the December 1998 article "Seismic Behavior and Design of Gusset Plates", by Abolhassan Astaneh-Asl. It covers gussets in compression. (page 29 I think).
