Does fiber opitc cable require an area class certification?

I am providing data sheets for downhole fiber optic temperature sensing. The electronics are connected at surface for light transmission and data collection. With RTD's an area classification is required e.g: Good for Class 1, Zone 2. But does a fiber optic cable need this?

I would think not as there is no electrical current passing through like there would be in the RTD.

Fiber optics can be used in hazardous locations without any concern. Transmitters and receivers are a separate issue.

You might want to check IEC 60079-28 first.

The majority of fibre applications are fine, but some of the high power sources used for long-haul data transmission can create an ignition hazard if a fibre is broken within a hazardous area. There are three categories recognised within the Ex 'op' group under IEC 60079 - inherently safe, mechanically protected, and interlocked (i.e. detection of fibre break)
