Hello all

My understanding is that, all the other essential variables and suplimentary essential variables being appropriately addressed,ASME Sec IX gives the range of qualification based on thickness, that is, if a PQR is qualified using a given thickness material then using the WPS (That is supported by the PQR) a range of thickness in the job can be weleded.

The query is this.

Material "A" is 50mm thickness and is tapered to 30 mm (1 : 4) and is getting welded with "B" which is 32 mm thick.

If there is a procedure Qualification that is performed with 20mm plate, can the WPS (Supported by the PQR that was done 20mm plate) be used for the welding of 50mm thick plate (1: 4 Taper at Joint and reduced to 32mm) with 32mm plate (Figure also shown in WPS).

Welding Process SMAW, Impact at -40, Material Carbon steel A 516 Gr 70 (PQR also done with 516 Gr 70 but 20mm plate (PWHT cycle soaking time is 2 hours in PQR).
The Job is also going to be heat treated for 2 Hours.

I searched ASME Section IX, Sec VII Div 1, ASME Div 2, ANSI 31.3, ANSI 31.8, AWS D 1.1 and still could not locate the clause that specifies the governing thickness for the purpose of PQR.

Can some one gie the specific clause number that deals with the specific question.

The WPS would be acceptable for use on material A because the base metal thickness AT the weld joint is 30mm, which is below the maximum thickness limit of 40mm supported by the WPS. Since the PQR was qualified using 20mm thick P-No 1 base material, the WPS is qualified for use up to 40mm in base metal thickness, per ASME Section IX (QW 451.2).

Section IX only relates to the thickness of either base metal at the weld joint not the base metal thickness away from the weld joint.
 
I don't have the interpretation number with me, but there is an ASME IX interpretation I read a few weeks ago describing your situation. The interpretation agreed with Metengr. Only the thickness at the welded joint is addressed in Section IX.
