Does UL certify manufacturers of above ground petroleum storage tanks?

We currently have an ASME "U" stamp & "PP" stamp and NBIC "R" stamp for pressure vessels.

Are currently bidding some petroleum storage tanks built to UL 142 & UL 2085 standards and cannot find information on the need or requirement for a manufacturer's certification.

I have been to the UL.com website which shows a directory of companies that are UL certified and emailed them about how to obtain certifications with no results.

Thanks in advance for any info,
QCRobert

Best thing to do is contact UL at cec(at)us.ul.com (if in the United States).

My impression is that companies in this category are not certified by UL. Products are listed. You may have found companies that make UL listed products.

The cec address is a good one, they answer fairly promptly.

Good on ya,

Just received correspondence back from UL personnel and will share with you.

UL 142 and Ul 2085 are used for the following main category:

To view the companies that have certification under this category you can click on "View Listings" in the upper left hand corner.

To view all categories go to: Then in the middle box enter "142" then do it again for "2085".

The owner of the certification is known as the Applicant.

The Applicant pays the Engineering fee and yearly maintain fees and controls how the design are built to ensure that they are made in accordance with the requirements. The tank is evaluated to the requirements of the standards.

I do not have an estimate on the Engineering fee(that has to be obtained from sales) but the yearly fee is $ 1,200 for the file certification and $ 350 for each of the quarterly inspections.

A design or designs are submitted for certification. Each design needs to be evaluated. Once Engineering performs the engineering review a technical file is created documenting the design and then certification is issued.

Then 4 times a year a UL Field Representative visits the factory to ensure that the design has not changed. Then the tanks are shipped from the factory with the UL Mark. If there are special built tanks or tanks in the field which require certification UL offers a service known as a Field Evaluation were UL goes to the job site and evaluates the tank. This requires full access to the tank and also the tank needs to be filled with water for the pressure and leak tests.

I can submit a quote request for you just need your full company name and contact information and a description of the tank and how many.
