I'm trying to assist some friends design a septic system for their planned dog kennel. back in november of '03 Hokiengineer posed a question about this.

My question would be to ask Hokiengineer where the >400mg/l and 153 mg/l values he included in that post for BOD and TSS were obtained. If anyone has a source that would help me quantify wastewater strength for such an installation it would be most appreciated.

You are probably going to get widely varying estimates for BOD and TSS depending on whether the feces is washed down the drain or picked up.

Since you are planning on the use of a septic system, you probably should try to remove the feces off the floor and place it in a dumpster rather than wash it down the drain into the septic system.

Here is some help on the BOD side:

Kentucky State regulations call for a wastewater flow of 5 gallons per dog per day:

You'll also need to design in for hair collection - quite a prominent feature in kennel waste! It can be a right pain to deal with, it tends to get everywhere, clogging as it goes.
