DONGLE

I HAVE GOT A NEWS PC, INSTALLED ALL THE SOFTWARE AND PLUGGED MY DONGLE IN THE BACK BUT EVERYTIME I LOAD UP SOLIDWORKS IT SAYS MY SECURITY DEVICE (DONGLE) IS MISSING OR OUT OF DATE, HOW DO I GET IT TO WORK?

From my understanding a dongle is for people that live outside the US. These people must have a Dongle on their machines to run SW.

However I could be wrong on this.

SolidWorks does provide dongles for multiple users. You have two users that use SolidWorks 50% of their day. You install SolidWorks on two machines and transfer the dongle back and forth.
I have also seen high schools that are using the student version of SolidWorks with dongles on their machines. One in particular almost threw the software out because of all the problems with the dongles. I have heard but have not varified that you may need the dongle present on the machine when installing SoildWorks.
One other thing you might check and make sure the port that you are plugging the dongle into is working. Plug a printer or some other device in to see if it works. I had a dongle back on SW95 and it actually kept corrupting my port. After two new motherboards, which the PC manufacture flipped the bill for, we just bought a second license.
If I am not mistaken we have went through three or four sets of dongles here for our network. They do not seem very reliaable. You may have a bad dongle. BBJT CSWP

Thanks for the heads-up about Dongles and SWX, I had no idea.

Going back to what you said BBJT, I think you may be on to something about having to have the dongle inserted prior to installing the software. At my last company we had software (I can't remember the name at the moment) that used a dongle. The dongle actually had a IC chip that was programed with various information that was updated during the install. Without the dongle, the install never worked. We have a dongle where I work and it is used for a FLOATING license. SWX is installed on multiple machines, but only one person is allowed on the software at one time. We are in the beginning stages of using SWX and do not need several license, yet!

To get to the point, when we first installed the software (SW 2001) it came with a bad dongle. I just had to email the tech support at SWX with the dongle ID (on the side of your dongle) and they could tell me if it was a bad one or not. When I updated to 2001+ I had to get a new License manager file, also you get from SWX.

In the long run the dongle is a real pain in the #$%!

One thing you may want to check is that globetrotter has issued a recall on many of their security dongles within a certain serial number range. they have been shipping them as early as last month. Check the Solidworks website for details reagarding that issue and see if your serial number falls within that range. Regards,

What operating system are you using?? We've had the same problem with Windows 2000 professional. The probelm was that the parallel port the dongle was plugged into was not active. To activate it do....

Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Ports/LPT1 Properties/Then check the 'enable legacy plug and play detection' box and click ok. You might have to reboot windows (been a while since I did this), but solid works should now fire up OK.

I've seen Solidworks, and although Solidworks has rave reviews for "this" and "that", I don't think anything beats
Ashlar Vellum Cobalt for ease of sketching & drawing.

It (Cobalt) is also a lot cheaper.

Have you tried Microsofts Visio? I find it to be even easier for making a simple representation for a shop to understand. It is even cheaper than Ashlar Vellum.

If you have a Dongle, it must be installed correctly BEFORE the installation of SW. It must be plugged into an ACTIVE parallel port that is set to ECP (I believe). If it is set to anything else, it will not see it....
