Anyone got info on the allowed depth of corrosion removal in the actual bathtub basin [Douglas DC 4] where the nuts/bolts sit[this holds the wing tip with the main fuel tank] Cheers

1. The DC-4 airframe maintenance manual will be Your best bet. There are companies selling old AMMs.

2. Try contacting Boeing commercial tech support... and ask if they provide any Douglas-heritage engineering expertise for early [prop] DC-3-to-DC-7 acft. IF Boeing/DAC has no expertise on this antique, then they may know who to contact; IE: other mod/repair companies or organizations with engineering support.

3. Check for any FAA ACs, ADs, SBs or SLs on this particular issue.

NOTE.
FAA AC 20-52 "Maintenance Inspection Notes for Douglas DC 6/7 Series Aircraft" comes close... as an example [There may be similar data for the DC-4].

4. The following associations may also be able to help.

"The Douglas DC-4 Association of South Africa"
"Dutch Dakota Association" [now DDA Classic airlines]

For those who believe, no proof is required; for those who cannot believe, no proof is possible.

Was the DC-4 included in those SIRM's that the FAA mandated a few decades ago?

Thruthefence... interesting find!

Hope it relates to airframe repair: might just relate to inspection and general C-54 aircraft maintenance... but at least its a step in the right direction.

I would assume that the associations [noted] would have just about every maintenance and repair document they could get-hold-of on the DC-4/C-54 acft.

We do already have the Structures,Parts and Maintenance manuals for the DC-4 but the info is only generalised when it comes to the corrosion repair of the bathtub fitting.Just wanted to know more about the stresses within/thru the actual bathtub portion of the angle fitting so as to have a better understanding in evaluating the serviceability of the fitting. The fitting I was referring to is one on the top inside the fuel tank. Cheers

Thank you for your replies. Will proceed with trying to get a hold of page C4-7. Cheers

I scanned that design manual a bit, found some great stuff.
Thanks!
An interesting feature before they dive into the technical stuff is Chapter A, general design procedures - go to A.4 for example. How many times have we tried to explain that to a new guy? ...or a not-so-new guy? Or ourselves skipped such steps when, on hindsight, they could have helped avoid a problem.
