I AM PRESENTLY DESIGNING A HYDRO COOLER WHICH REQUIRES A WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM, IS THERE A CALCULATOR OR FORMULA AVAILABLE TO GIVE ME THE FOLLOWING?
1) DESIRED WATER FLOW - 10, 15, OR 20 GPM
2) WATER HEAD ABOVE PERFORATED PLATE 4" TO 5"
I NEED TO CALCULATE DIA. & SPACING ON HOLES TO GIVE ABOVE MENTIONED PARAMETERS

Being a simple guy, I would choose a number of holes, say 10 holes 1/4" in diameter. Then I would calcuate an orfice pressure drop for the holes based on 1/10th the total flow. If it is 4" to 5" of water column I am set. I doubt that it is but then I can iterate the solution. Maybe I know the minimum hole diameter that I want so I vary the number of holes. Maybe I think that ten holes makes a very even pattern and I vary the diameter to get what I want. You may also want to check turn down and max flow for your unit once you settle on the design. Sorry I don't know an easier way. Maybe someone else does.

I don't know how to desing a "Hydro Cooler" (or even what one is), but it sure sounds like you are trying to do what we stormwater engineers do when we route a storage volume through an outlet control structure. Headwater inflow and outflow flowrates all dynamically affect each other, tailwater can even be considered when needed.

If so, download the free sampler from here:

It is very user friendly, it sounds like vertical or horizontal orifices are what you want to model. Try that.

PLease excuse me - 10, 15, or 20 GPM per Square foot downward water flow desired
