I'm looking for drafting Software recommendations for documenting controller circuits. I seldom get tasked to design circuits using basic components such as relays, diodes, capacitors. I'm just wondering what everybody's favorite programs are. I never much liked Visio and it's $600. I have used other Autodesk products and they're fine but their circuit drafting software is $450 per month. I feel like I average 1-2 circuits per year. I'd really like a program capable of making basic drawings with industry standard symbols that I can purchase without using a membership and that is all.

KiCAD is a frequent favorite. The relative infrequency may make the interface more difficult to use so there may be a high learning hurdle at the start. So far as I know it's free. There are 3rd party libraries available.

I'd rate it as worth a look; the documentation is better than many and the user community seems enthusiastic.

KiCAD is geared towards electrical schematics rather than controllers (which tend to be higher level, towards the drafting program side of things). Visio is more appropriate for this, but since you don't like it, I'd look at any free (and simple) drafting program that has pre-existing controller symbol libraries. I can't make any specific suggestions as Visio is my go-to for that kind of thing.

There is a free program called TinyCad Which tends to be as much a user group as a program . It worth looking at, whether it can do what you want is another question.

You are judged not by what you know, but by what you can do.

TinyCad looks promising. I'll download it before my next trip so I have something to kill the boredom with. If it doesn't meet my needs, Visio does appear to be the best option as it doesn't require monthly subscription.

Brilliant. I whipped out a drawing in the TinyCad program and it's exactly what I need. Of course I need some practice now but the program is a breeze to learn.
