Hi,

I am designing the grading and drainage of an empty containers yard, for this i am using 1/150 slopes to drainage the yard outwards, where i am designing some open culverts... the area of the yard is near to 4 ha. and it has a square shape. The final surface of the yard will consist of base coarse, and in order to drain the yard i put a geotextile between the base and the grade. This yard will be made for a temporary use (no more than 5 years), so the cost of it is very limited... but the owners want a good drainage system (of low cost)... I am thinking in a french drainage system trough the yard.

What do you think about this solution, if you have any other ideas i'll appreciate so much...

Thanks

A few questions:

1. If you are surface draining the lot at 1/150 to open culverts at the perimeter, why do you need a french drain system through the yard? Surface drainage is a cheep as it gets.

2. Where do the open culverts around the yard perimeter drain?

3. I would consider the 1/150 (0.75%) slope the absolute minimum for a well compacted stone base. If you could boost that up to 1.0% to 1.25% you could get the water off the lot quicker and there would be fewer "bird baths". Perhaps, you could have a series of drainage swales through the yard to carry the water away, rather than drain half of the lot each of the four ways.

Thanks for your answer jheidt2543, first...sorry for my english... the open "culverts" are really open Channels and drain to other bigger channel in front of the yard.
I know that 1/150 (0.67%) is a minimum slope and 1/100 would be better, but the fact is that the earthworks with this slopes are too much for the owners...(maybe they use this yard for about 2 years, 5 years max).

Thank you for your suggestions, I'll consider them.

Xisko,

No apology necessary, I'm sorry to say that English is my only language. Also, terminology is different in various countries so, it is good to try an be specific in your questions, so we can try to give specific answers.

Best of luck with your project.
