I need to draw a helical spring or a coil. I would appreciate if you could suggest how to go about doing that. I am using SolidWorks2001Plus.

Thanks

Create a helix for the path and put the wire diameter at the end of the helix and generate a sweep.

How do I create a helix? Is helix not a 3D sketch? I am not sure how to do this. I can do swee once I know how to create a helix sketch.

I can use SW library for spring but would like to know how to do it from scratch.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

adymech1,

From your questions it sounds like you are new to SolidWorks. Congratulations, you made a good choice. In order to get the most out of SolidWorks and to shorten your learning curve you should invest some time in training yourself. SolidWorks has a superb tutorial built in to the help menu. Do yourself a favor and go through every exercise in this Online Tutorial. (I don't know why they call it "Online" when you don't link to the internet.) After that then you know what words to search on in the help index if you need more help - "helix" comes to mind.

Enjoy!!

I have forgotten things from SW01+, but my advice is to look in the SolidWorks Help for Helix.

Have you read faq731-376 to make the best use of Eng-Tips Forums?

Making a helix has not changed in any of the versions.

Make a circle (2D sketch)the nominal size of the spring. Then click Helix/Spiral under your curves toolbar. give it the pitch, height or revolution (you have to pick 2 of the three).

walla a helix.

If you had downloaded one of the files I suggested and broke it down you would have seen this easliy. It's a good way to teach yourself how to do things. Also look in the help it will also explain how to do things. Also if you haven't alreayd go through the online tutorial
