Is there an easy way to include the overall size of a part (LxWxH) in the BOM? I'd also like to include the material.

Currently I have an assembly with 78 parts (I'd rather not have to set up custom properties for every dimension for every part in my model). When I insert the BOM, the part names, #'s, and quantity comes through, but the columns for stock size, and material are blank.

I deal with hundreds of assemblies a week. Most of them are 50+ parts. I'd love to find a way to automate this process.

Thanks!

Just a thought....

Can I set up our part templates to have the custom properties already in them?

Or maybe I can start with a part 'blank' with custom props attached inside the template (if I have to have a part in the template in order to utilize the custom props.)

Will the BOM know to put these custom props in the spaces provided in the template (Stock Size, Material)? Or will I have to edit the BOM each time to find the custom properties?

goodtruant,

At some point, your parts list must point to a separate fabrication drawing that shows all the dimensions of the part.

What sort of parts are you trying to document? The weldment feature allows you to use standard sections, and it shows the lengths on what it calls the cut list.

If you are assembling standard thicknesses of plate, you can create a template that sets the length of width, and calls it up as part of the description.

Perhaps, this is not a SolidWorks problem. It is a problem of you understanding the nature of your standard materials.

It's totally my not understanding Solidworks....not an issue with Solidworks. I've only been using SW for a few months.

I've attached some pics of the project I'm working on. Mostly wood. We do all custom stuff. I've tried to use weldments for the parts, and maybe I should give it another try....but since we do purely custom items I spent more time drawing profiles than I wanted to.

I set up the BOM and a part template to do just what you said. So the overall width, length and thickness of each part is listed, as well as it's material.

Generally we work off a wood "cutlist", and do separate fabrication drawings for parts that are machined on our CNC.

Thanks for the help.

The following link provides answers to your questions...

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get terribly involved in this project before I was put on another one, so I can't answer many of your questions.

SW Premium 2011
64 bit SP4.0
Intel Xenon X5650 @2.67GHz
2.66 GHz 11.9 GB of RAM

Set your parts up with custom properties in them, linked to the part.

I now have my part templates set up with custom properties.

I had to go back and add custom properties to every part in this model....I never want to do that again. :p

Now I want to sort my list by material....and renumber the list back to numerical order, is there any way to do this?

Externally, in Microsoft Excel.

We have part templates for our general shapes such as plate, pipe angle and such, we then added equations for calculating length, width, thickness and unit of measure quantity. such as square foot. we then assigned those equations to custom property on the part template. our bom pulls from those custom property's and also calculates our total square foot usage by multiplying the UOM_QTY times the QTY. it Works well for us.
