I'm getting started doing some reasearch on designing a dry sump tank. I was wondering if somebody had some rule of tumb's, guidelines or a recomandation on literature on this subject. My specs on this oil system is a 1 1/4 in pump feed line (tank outlet), one AN12 return and 19 qts total tank capacity.

My questions are:

(1) Separation tubes design
(a) Consistant cross sectional area or would an cross sectional area increase be benificail for the antiaeration process due to a (relativly low) pressure drop.
(b) Slots or holes and what ratios seems to work well, by ratio I think ratio of tube dia.
(c) Short or long sepration tubes

(2) Oil pick up
(a) Bell mouth type pickup or a duckbill type pickup and any pointers on how to dimensionalize either one. I have been told that I need a 15 sq in duckbill but there I want to know how to dimensionalize something like this.

(3) Oil tank vent
(a) size as a ratio of outlet ???
(b) Special consideration if a duckbill type pickup is used

I know this a big post but please bare with me :))

thanks alot

I am also looking into a dry sump system. Do you know where I might find some information on the basic operation of a dry sump?

Over here we use pas pumps drawing oil from the base of the sump, float controlled anti aeration valves to allow only oil to return to the oil tank,a cooler & filter is also incorporated into the supply pipe to keep the oil cool & clean.
Perforated metal windage trays are also added to assist also of course all this is homemade and you can get a lot of information from piston aero engine books.
